Splash Damage: Throwing Caution to the Wind, part Nano

leave a comment »

So, my beloved (well, maybe not) Nano is now equipped with the Rockbox firmware, which doesn’t replace the iPod Nano firmware, but sort of runs besides it. As we speak I’m loading up various files and going to give it a whirl, but it’s got several advantages over the stock firmware, including FLAC and OGG Vorbis support, and Gapless playback. If this works as advertised, then hey, the Nano becomes a great DAP as opposed to good DAP.

Stay tuned.

Update: The Rockbox makes the iPod what it really should be.  Adding such “basic” features such as full featured EQ and gapless playback shouldn’t be all that hard.  On top of that, it adds such niceties as mp3gain (replaygain) feature, oddles of codec support, crossfeed (and other stuff that I’ve not even touched yet) amongst others.

Throwing caution to the wind, definiately.  Does it make the experience better?  I think so.  It just needs some better themes to go with it, the default themes are really so fugly.
