Splash Damage: Sansa E200 vs. E100, new keyboard.

Don’t laugh.  I’m typing this on a keyboard I had my eyes on since it was released, the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000!  The previous keyboard I had been using for several odd years now is the original Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard graced with the Gateway logo (or it’s very close to the Microsoft one anyways).  I have to admit, other than the noisy and clacky spacebar (why couldn’t it be bifurcated like its predecessor?), the keyboard is very quiet, very comfortable, and is in every way a better keyboard than it predecessors.  The whole F-Lock thing aside, it’s a keyboard that I’ve been needing for the last two years or so.

On the other hand, the evolution to the next step isn’t all that kind to the Sansa line.  Yea, I finally got my grubby hands on a E250 (2GB).  Couple of things that makes this from reaching greatness:

  1. MicroSD.  Yes, it is smaller, and it is probably an all around better choice for portable players than the old standard SD.  However, it’s still not easily obtained as its larger cousin, and it’s too small.  Yea, one wrong flick and oops, you’ve lost your data.  Whole Gig’s worth.
  2. No AAC support.  This is 2007, not 2003.  Anything released after 2005-6 should have AAC support, even if it is shoehorned in as a firmware update.

It sounds on par with the Sansa E100, if less dynamic or lively (as all PortalPlayer powered players tend to).  Too bad Sandisk didn’t stick with Sigmatel, as I find their sound to be more agreeable than others, and certainly on level with Sony stuff.  Let’s face it.  All DRM hurdles aside, Sony made some great sounding gears in the past.  Now that Sigmatel’s eaten and fully digested Rio’s considerable heritage (in sound and interface), it’s gotten to a level where even the cheapest players these days can sound pretty darn good.  I hope to see that come to fruition soon.

Finally, Bostonians, don’t let your inferiority complex get in the way of you becoming the laughing stock of the world.  A rude Mooninite or two shouldn’t bring the city to a grinding halt. But then again, when you’re Boston, you’re always third place.  I kid, I kid Boston.  More like 7th place.  Even Newark’s more appealing than Boston these days.
